Investigation of the "Fast Fashion" impact

25-Jun-2018
Investigation of the
It will be interesting to see how much of the work by the commons environmental audit committee will focus on education. Fast fashion is cheap and those consumers who buy that type of fashion won’t suddenly be in a financial position to change their shopping habits. However, what we can do as a nation is educate shoppers and urge retailers to be more transparent about how and where they get their products from.

If we are all to really make a difference, retailers need to ensure they are open and honest with consumers. Where are fast fashion clothes made? Who makes them? Are the workers fairly paid? Can a t-shirt that costs £2.50 truly be ethical when it’s made in the Far East, transported halfway round the world, disintegrates in the wash, and deposits micro plastics into the waste pipe of the washing machine, and ultimately the watercourses and sea?

Those retailers that get on board with any action the committee requires to address the sustainability of their entire supply chain, are those that will continue to thrive and really make an impact in this increasingly complex environment. Ultimately, transparency will be where the true value lies when it comes to cutting down on fast fashion and to improve the sustainability of the clothes we buy. However, if this is going to be an ongoing debate with actionable insight, then it will also be interesting to see how businesses respond to the findings and actions from this. Fast fashion retailers will have to change if a new mindset in consumers sparks a revolution away from our throw away and forget the consequences culture.

This goes further than just a question about waste, it is a larger global issue eating into the heart of our culture. The commons committee’s work is invaluable and could be used to continue to educate us all.
