‘A revolution happened in the way we buy services last week – and no one has noticed!’

‘A revolution happened in the way we buy services last week – and no one has noticed!’
Last week Amazon launched its Home Services scheme to help shoppers find local plumbers, handymen, electricians, etc. Not to be caught napping eBay ramped-up its local services offering to help regional photographers, furniture assembly professionals, electricians and other trades reach local shoppers more directly. The e-commerce delivery expert ParcelCompare says both moves could transform the way we find and book local tradespeople.

ParcelHero’s Head of Consumer Research, David Jinks MILT, says: ‘Randomly surfing the web for reputable local tradespeople is a nerve racking experience. Who should they be registered with? Are they really local? Even finding a site that actually has relevant local service providers with real customer reviews is a hassle. A recent survey showed 77% of Brits find knowing who to trust is the hardest part of finding a service professional.’

Amazon Home Services will enable customers to book and pay tradespeople from furniture assemblers to electricians to housecleaning services. Explains David: ‘Amazon is placing a lot of emphasis on sourcing people consumers can trust. The tradespeople are “handpicked” by Amazon and, of course, star-rated by customers. If you are a regular Amazon user, it is a reassuring service to use – and apparently services are backed by Amazon’s “Happiness Guarantee” What a brave new world we live in!’

And Amazon rival eBay isn’t being left out the loop, adds David: ‘Its new local services scheme helps local service organisations reach new local customers. eBay wants to become a marketplace for services as well as products; its new Local Services Ads will help shoppers browsing, for example, taps, by showing them adverts for plumbers local to them.’

A wide variety of trades will be incorporated from hair salons, handymen and pest controllers; to photographers, dance studios, and babysitters.

Observes David: ‘There has really been surprisingly little fuss about the launch of both services – but for DIY-challenged homeowners like myself, they could prove essential.’

Amazon Home Services has kicked off in Greater London, Birmingham and Manchester, and is expected to rapidly move towards a nationwide service; and eBay has soft-launched its innovative Local Services Ads scheme throughout the UK. Concludes David: ‘The timing seems just right; as 47% of us say we have no idea what do when faced with a DIY job at home, and 61% of us would rather hire a professional to tackle home tasks.’
