60% of UK companies face a skills gap within their tech departments and cannot fill positions quickly enough to meet demand.

To solve this major challenge, London startup Geektastic has launched a new technology platform supported by a global community of highly skilled software engineers, who are offering unique peer-reviewed coding challenges to evaluate developers, to support and accelerate the recruitment process for UK companies.

Geektastic has launched to help companies find developers more quickly and cost effectively than traditional methods. Skyscanner, Accenture, Go Compare and Just Giving have used Geektastic to evaluate their developers pre recruitment.

Unlike traditional coding challenges, Geektastic offers unique peer-reviewed coding challenges that test a candidate’s technical skills and their approach to problem solving.

The tests are designed and reviewed by the community’s ‘UberGeeks’ - experienced tech developers who have been handpicked from around the world.

Candidates receive constructive feedback on their assignments enabling them to improve their skills and knowledge and, if they excel, they too are invited to become an UberGeek reviewer.

As a platform and community run by developers for developers, Geektastic more efficiently matches software skills with employers and the challenges are more engaging and robust for candidates.

Geektastic Co-founder Rick Brownlow says, “Coding challenges are a vital part of the recruitment process, but the current model is failing developers and employers. Most software developers dislike traditional coding challenges as they are restrictive and time consuming and taking an automated challenge and being marked by a machine is equally unsatisfactory.”

“Geektastic allows candidates to demonstrate both their creativity, problem solving capabilities and technical skills, making the selection process far more personal, realistic and rigorous. Candidates enjoy the challenges and the high standards and benchmarks we set are respected by employers.”

Over 5000 developers have joined the Geektastic community and 80 developers are now employed as UberGeeks to set and review code challenges.

Andy Davies, .NET and Java UberGeek and consultant software developer at Tenkai Solutions says, “Companies are rejecting really good developers because of the results generated from restrictive automated coding challenges marked by machines. This is like being in an interview and only being expected to answer ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to closed questions versus having an open discussion – it is totally limiting.”

He added, “My colleague sat an automated coding challenge which was so restrictive it wouldn’t allow test driven development - a very widely used approach. With Geektastic, he would have been free to approach the problem from any angle and his knowledge would have been credited.”

One recruitment firm that is using Geektastic to screen candidates is IT recruitment firm Mortimer Spinks. Robin Beattie, Director at Mortimer Spinks added, “Coding challenges can create a real barrier to recruitment. It’s a candidate driven market right now and they are put off companies that put them through lengthy coding challenges which delay the hiring process. Companies need to take a different approach to hiring tech talent and improve the candidate experience.

“For Mortimer Spinks, Geektastic has been a really effective way of identifying the best software developers. Candidates are much more responsive to taking part in peer reviewed assessments, rather than automated tests, and our clients value the depth and insight the assessments provide. By getting greater engagement from both candidates and clients, the platform is actively helping us make more successful placements. And that’s great for the software developer, our clients and of course us.”

James Adams, People Finder at Just Giving concluded, “We engaged with Geektastic to evaluate candidates for some new high profile roles - we wanted the human touch you just can't get from automated technical assessments.”
